‘Damaged Goods’ at David Gill Galleries
19th February - 20th March ’10
In February David Gill Galleries in London will show a selection of new works from renowned ceramic artist Barnaby Barford. The pieces on display were made in correlation with the production of Barford’s first animated film ‘Damaged Goods’. This exhibition not only surmises his project, but also showcases an innovative way of utilizing ceramic figurines to create artistic narrative within an interior space.
The film was commissioned by Animate Projects and funded by the Arts Council England and Channel 4 where it first aired last year. It tells a tragic love story played out by porcelain figurines and explores notions of forbidden love, material wealth, class divisions, and even traditions of value within ceramics.
Each of the 9 pieces in the collection that will show at David Gill Galleries is inspired by the film without directly replicating any one scene. According to Barford, ‘the pieces I have made are an important conclusion to the entire project.’
Barford works with both mass-market and antique found porcelain figurines, cutting up and exchanging elements or adding to them and repainting them, to create sculptures which are often sinister and sardonic but invariably humorous. The 9 pieces in this exhibition will be shown alongside projections of the film.
