Design Real at the Serpentine
26th November '09 - 7th February '10
The Serpentine Gallery
Kensington Gardens, London
Now open at the Serpentine Gallery is ‘Design Real’, the gallery’s first major exhibition devoted entirely to contemporary design. This ground-breaking exhibition showcases REAL industrial design products in a way that proves design does not have to mimic art to be appreciated.
The show is extremely well curated by German product designer Konstantin Grcic, and it focuses on REAL design items that have a practical function in everyday life. By highlighting objects that directly impact our lives, the exhibition examines how design both shapes and reflects our constantly changing society.
‘What interests me about industrial design is how these things are made, in what material, and how this has affected their language and their quality. Some objects are very technically-driven; the function really determines the object,’ explains Grcic.
The exhibition features a wide range of objects by leading international designers and manufacturers, from furniture and household products to technical and industrial innovations. All of the pieces on display were conceived in last decade.
