The Great DesignArt Debate
By Rabih Hage and Karen Ryan for the Financial Times
That design is made, manufactured, sold and exhibited just like art has become a subject of much debate. It would seem that more and more the design world is turning to one-off pieces and limited editions that are audacious, expressive and experimental in nature. These pieces are no longer considered simply objects of utility and are transgressing the traditional boundaries between art and design.
Whether coined by auction House Phillips De Pury, or writer Alex Coles, the term DesignArt has been the subject of great dispute since its inception.
In the Financial Times article, 'The Great DesignArt Debate', published April 11th, 2008, design gallerist Rabih Hage and contemporary designer Karen Ryan argue the relevance of the term and the need for this whole new branch of design.
