The Double Club
7 Torrens Street, London
Carsten Holler is back in London, and this time with a fully functioning nightclub, bar and restaurant.
This latest pop-up installation, which runs for three months starting this friday, is yet another example of the blurring of lines between art, design, entertainment and hospitality.
Located in a Victorian warehouse behind Angel Tube station, Höller’s club is a juxtaposition of western and Congolese cultures. Everything from the food, drinks, music art and design is available in either cultural format.
The restaurant offers two simultaneous menus, while the dance floor rotates with DJ’s playing Congolese or western music depending on which side of the club they find themselves.
Holler’s work is about experience as well as visual effect. He invites the user to become a part of the work drawing particular attention to the collective human experience all the while emphasizing the importance of context as it relates defining a work.
The Double Club is made possible by the Fondazione Prada. All profits from the venture will go to a charity for Congolese rape victims.
