Cold War Modern
25th September '08 - 11 January '09
V&A South Kensignton
Cromwell Road, London SW7 2RL
LAST CHANCE: For those of you who have not yet managed to make it down to see Cold War Modern at the V&A we highly recommend you schedule a trip.
Concentrating on the years from 1945 to 1970, the exhibition examines how design was shaped by the cold war period against the backdrop of the battle between communism and capitalism, the advances of the space race, and the international competition to be modern.
This period from the end of the Second World War to the mid 1970s was a period of great political tension and exceptional creativity which touched all aspects of life, from everyday products to the highest arenas of human achievement in science and culture. Art and design were not peripheral symptoms of politics during the Cold War: they played a central role in representing and sometimes challenging the dominant political and social ideas of the age.
With over 300 objects on display, ranging from the iconic to the unfamiliar, this intriguingly complex exhibition offers an unprecedented look into the design, architecture, film and popular culture derived from sides of the Iron Curtain throughout the Cold War era .
