Chicago Architecture Biennial 2019
'...And Other Such Stories'
The 2019 Chicago architectural biennial which is spread over roughly 40 venues, aims to serve as a hub for different and great ideas. Unlike previous iterations there is no single focus driving the event. Rather, there are 4 distinct themes behind the exhibition, “no land beyond”, “appearances and erasures”, “rights and reclamation” and “common ground”. These seek to address a variety of contemporary and historical issues. For example, “no land beyond” will explore the relationship between architecture and nature, while “rights and reclamation” reflects on the influences that architecture and activism have on one another. However, one key philosophy of the 2019 biennial shines forth in the “common grounds” portion. As the name suggests, the exhibition wants its architectural pieces to represent common ground for all cultures and societies. Architecture is a universal language and can be used as a tool for solving and discussing contemporary issues. The biennial prides itself on being accessible for all, in order to create a wider engagement into the issues it shines light on. Rather than telling a story, this exhibition is sharing, not only interesting, but important conversation, with designs and events that can engage people from any demographic or culture.
