Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture at Roca Gallery
London Design Festival '16
Roca London Gallery will be showcasing recent bathhouse projects by some of the world’s leading contemporary architects and designers. Soak, Steam, Dream explores a renewed interest in the connection between the physical, meditative and social aspects of bathing. New architectural projects and archival material will be installed in an immersive exhibition designed to look at architecture’s capacity to materialise the rediscovery of ancient water cultures and alternative bathing rituals, reimagining the culture of the bathhouse and factoring in smart water use for the twenty-first century.
Featured projects will include: Germán del Sol (Termas Geométricas), Kengo Kuma & Associates (Kogohi Bathhouse), Terunobu Fujimori (Lamune Onsen), Skene Catling de la Peña (The Dairy House), Something & Son Architects (Barking Bathhouse), and H3T Architekti alongside archival material including research from American critic and bathing aficionado Leonard Koren.
The exhibition has been curated by Jane Withers with exhibition design by Kellenberger-White. A series of events will accompany the exhibition.
