The Art Newspaper Changes Editor
Jane Morris steps down, to be succeeded by deputy editor Javier Pes
After almost eight years as editor of The Art Newspaper, Jane Morris is stepping down at the beginning of June. She joined The Art Newspaper in 2005, becoming co-editor of its art fair daily editions and working on the art market, museums and comment sections of the main paper, before becoming editor in 2008.
Under Jane's editorship, it has grown in size by almost 50% to include regular special reports, including the comprehensive annual survey of global museum attendance. The daily editions have multiplied to cover five of the world’s most prestigious art fairs (Art Basel, Art Basel in Miami Beach, Art Basel in Hong Kong, Frieze London/Frieze Masters and Frieze New York). The paper has also launched a new website, a daily digital news service, and its first interactive app, with artists’ guides and art market data, for the 2015 Venice Biennale.
Jane will retain a close relationship with The Art Newspaper as an editor-at-large, while also working on independent projects, media work, writing, lecturing and research. She will be succeeded by Javier Pes, who has been The Art Newspaper's deputy editor since 2010.
Javier, whose family is Spanish but who was born and brought up in the UK, studied history at Peterhouse College, Cambridge, and then became a curator at the Museum of London, followed by Reading Museums. He went on to edit Museum Practice magazine for the UK Museums Association before joining The Art Newspaper.
He says: I am proud and excited to be the next editor of The Art Newspaper and look forward to leading such a talented team of journalists in London and New York, and all our expert contributors worldwide.
Anna Somers Cocks, the founding editor of The Art Newspaper and the chief executive of U. Allemandi & Co. Publishing Ltd, which produces The Art Newspaper, says: Inna Bazhenova, owner and publisher of The Art Newspaper since 2014, and I are sorry to be losing Jane Morris, who is not only a very good editor but also a first-rate manager. We are entirely confident about the transition, however, because we know that Javier will be an intelligent and skilled successor and will continue to lead the paper creatively in the big challenge that all publications are facing today, which is news online as well as in print.
