On the 3rd of March 2015 Phillips will host a Contemporary Art & Design auction from 6pm at 450 Park Avenue, New York. Viewings for the auction begin on the 23rd of February 2015 and are open until the day of the auction. This sale brings together a small selection of artwork and design - a format pioneered by Wright in their 'Living Contemporary' sales.

FRANZ WEST

This piece is from a private collection in Vienna, acquired directly from the artist.
A similar piece, also entitled Divan - created in 2003, two years later than the current lot - was sold at Sotheby's Contemporary Art Day Auction on July 1st 2014 for $111,263 (it was estimated at $60,003 - 77,147). The provenance of this piece read the same as the current work for sale with Phillips.
The first appearance of 'Divan' by Franz West on the secondary market was at the Important 20th Century Design on the 14th of June 2008 at Sotheby's New York. This piece was created in 1991 and was being put to auction by Galleria Mario Pieroni of Rome. It was bought in.

The chair was purchased from Industry Gallery Washington D.C. by the current owner in 2011. It is number 11 in an edition of 20.
This chair has often been seen on the secondary market, each time selling at the higher end or above the estimated value. The most recent sale of an edition of this chair was at Christie's London '20/21 Design' sale on the 4th of November 2014. The chair sold for $47,969 and was estimated at $31,979 - 47,969.

This work comes from Haunch of Venison Gallery - a primary market art gallery that was bought by Christie's in 2007 and closed by Christie's in 2013 to focus on the secondary market. Other editions of this work have beens old on the secondary market, fetching sales prices mid to high of the estimate range. Most recently an edition of this work was sold at Phillips New York's 'Design Masters' sale on the 17th of December 2013 for $71,250 (estimated at $60,000 - 80,00)
