“The Architect at Phillips was the first exhibition and auction of its kind; celebrating many of the architects that have shaped and built our world over the last two centuries. Perhaps Buckminster Fuller's Unique ‘Dymaxion Airocean World Map’, for the Third National Bank, Dayton, 1979 is the best metaphor for embracing the global community of spectacular pieces featured in The Architect Sale. Unique works were represented by artists spanning the globe from Japan, to The United States, South America, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, The United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Germany, Austria, to Iran and India. I travelled the globe, to many of these places, studying the masterpieces built by the architects featured in the sale and was able to see their philosophies first hand. From that, photographs were taken of each piece, set in chronological order, which in the end provided a linear perspective on both the socio-political and architectural fronts.

We are pleased with the results had by the works of Jean Prouvé, Axel Einar Hjorth, Frank O. Gehry, Buckminster Fuller, Arne Jacobsen, Zaha Hadid, Kaare Klint, Poul Henningsen, Greta Magnusson-Grossman, Oscar Niemeyer, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann, Ettore Sottsass, JR., and Richard Meier, to name a few. This magnificent collection of works could be seen as a window into architecture’s narrative and has challenged us to look into the past and also have an eye on the future.” Lee F. Mindel, FAIA

The Design Department at Phillips has proven success through offering the market focused sales and presenting works of exceptional quality, which time after time bring international bidders and world record prices” Alexander Payne, Worldwide Director of Design
