Phillips April Design Auction

Phillips is proud to announce highlights from the upcoming April Design auction, featuring 267 lots with a combined pre-sale low estimate of £3.9m and a pre-sale high estimate of £5.6m.
Three important works by Marc Newson are offered in the auction. The ‘Orgone Stretch Lounge’, ‘Event Horizon Table’ and ‘Alufelt Chair’ are all made in the early 1990’s out of undulating polished and painted aluminium.
Rare and significant works by Jean Royère including a ‘Bouquet’ eight arm chandelier, circa 1950, the ‘Croisillon’ sofa, circa 1948 and a Unique ‘Ruban’ sofa, commissioned for a private apartment in Paris, circa 1950 are also offered in the sale.
A group of works created especially for the 2012 London Design Festival are included in the auction. This section consists of a group of ten chairs and one unique chair by Nendo and a Max Lamb bench sculpted out of plaster, inspired by the Cast Courts at the V&A. A group of benches commissioned by Established & Sons for LDF are also incorporated in this section; Western Façade by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby is a simple marble monolith punctured with carefully placed holes; Jasper Morrison’s concrete Hitch; one of the three sections of Martino Gamper’s Infinity Bench and AL_A’s Bench of plates.
The April Design Auction also features a rare group of modernist ceramics by Lucie Rie and Hans Coper entitled the Abercairn Collection. Singular works and groups from this collection have toured various UK institutions since 2001. One work in the collection by Hans Coper, Globular Pot on Foot, won Coper the gold medal for Great Britain at the 1954 Milano Triennale.
