'Bloated Shelf' by Damien Gernay and 'Candlestick Portland' by David Taylor
exclusive to Galerie Gosserez
Galerie Gosserez have revealed two new exclusive pieces : a by candlestick by David Taylor and a bookshelf by french designer Damien Gernay.
'Bloated Shelf' by Damien Gernay explores his research into organic anarchy or how the matter creates its own shape when forced into a predefined structure.
Bloated Shelf is a particular illustration of that research, using leather. The idea originates from the image of a proeminent belly, constrained by the belt, but still comfortable at it fills a round shape around it. The shelf is a dialogue between a rigid structure and a flexible skin. When expanded, by foam, the leather takes its own shape and curls around the plank, making each piece an unique piece.
'Candlestick Portland' is symptomatic of my approach where visual impression, use of material and quality in execution are the most important aspects of my making. Concrete has a brutal architectural aspect which is perfect for use in an object with such obvious liturgical reference as the candlestick. As a material concrete has an inherent beauty, shades of grey, to be layered and contrasted with metal, in this case «Portland» is available in both copper and silver. When making these pieces each concrete stick is snapped to create a collection of plateau landscapes adding depth, and creating a visual hook to attract the eye.
